The Center for Victims of Torture is seeking a Field Coordinator to coordinate logistics operations of a psycho-social mental health project in Dadaab, Kenya, for people who have suffered torture and war trauma.

The position has a one-year, renewable agreement working in Dadaab.

Organization:

The Center for Victims of Torture provides rehabilitative support to survivors of torture and works for the prevention of torture worldwide. We work locally, nationally and internationally through programs that provide treatment services, training, research and advocacy that heal survivors and end the practice of torture.

Responsibilities:

Logistical Coordination:

• Provide overall coordination of logistics operations, including vehicles, security, material resources, and infrastructure support for all sites within the country.
• Ensure resources are effectively allocated to meet project needs.
• Manage systems for supplies procurement, capital purchasing and maintenance of buildings and equipment.
• Coordinate implementation of security protocols.
• Position may involve direct supervision of logistics and security staff members.

Administration/Finances:

• Assist in development of operational plans and budgets.
• Monitor finances to ensure resources are properly managed.
• Maintain records of all assets and financial transactions.
• Develop regular reports for country records, funders and headquarters that accurately document project activities.
• Coordinate data collection processes to track program activities and outcomes.
• Position may involve direct supervision of administrative and finance staff.

Communications:

• Represent the organization with NGOs, donors and host government.
• Strengthen communication across all operation sites.
• Report writing, editing and collating.

Project Coordination:

• Provide coordination of specific projects or leadership activities under the direction of the Country Director.
• Serve as Acting Country Director in his/her absence.

Qualifications:

• BA degree required in International Development or related field. Minimum 2 years overseas experience in relevant coordination or management capacity in an international non-governmental organization.
• Familiarity with private, US government, UN and multi-lateral funders.
• Experience developing and managing a team of staff members.
• Experience maintaining financial systems and managing reporting, as required by funders.
• Demonstrated ability in developing and maintaining logistics, communication, security and financial systems.
• Excellent cross-cultural skills.
• Strong oral and written communications skills; strong computer skills. Experience with statistical software desirable.
• Excellent organization and administrative skills.
• Ability to work in an isolated, rapidly evolving humanitarian emergency setting, lacking in amenities.
• Knowledge of psychology and psychosocial concepts.
• Fluency in English. Skills in Somali and / or Swahili highly desirable.
• Experience living and working in Africa desired.

Reporting to the Conservation Director, WWF Eastern & Southern Africa Programme (WWF-ESARPO), the Regional Coordinator has overall responsibility to:

• Coordinate the activities of the Feasibility Phase of the WWF Regional Climate Change Adaptation Initiative in Africa so as to assist WWF offices in Africa to integrate climate change considerations into their work programmes in order to safeguard high value conservation areas and local livelihoods in the areas in which WWF works through support for capacity building, climate change adaptation planning, vulnerability assessments and implementation of adaptation measures.
• Conducts inventory of WWF offices engaging in adaptation and the capacity in WWF offices in adaptation.
• Develops communications materials on WWF in Africa’s role in adaptation and ongoing activities in collaboration with WWF offices, and participates in relevant regional forum meetings, with the purposes of expanding our networking abilities, sharing WWF’s experiences and lessons learnt, and identifying possible opportunities for collaboration and growth.
• Facilitates the development of a vision and strategy for climate change adaptation in WWF activities in Africa.
• Provides technical support for implementation of, and coordinates with, existing WWF adaptation initiatives.
• Provides technical inputs to POs and country offices for their funding proposals for climate change adaptation.
• Develops annual plans and budgets in conjunction with the Oversight Committee. Develop a proposal for the second phase of the initiative

Key Requirements are:

• An advanced degree in environmental, natural or social science or any relevant qualification.
• 10 years relevant experience in environmental and development fields, including in the following areas: Climate change adaptation, experience in undertaking vulnerability assessments
• and climate change adaptation planning is preferred.
• Working with African governments.
• Coordinating multi-stakeholder initiatives.
• Working in a multi-cultural environment in Africa.
• Project and programme design, management, monitoring and evaluation, including budget development and management.
• Grant / funding programmes.
• Multilateral Environmental Agreements and Multilateral policy processes.

Required Special Skills and Knowledge

• Climate issues in Africa and developing countries
• Challenges faced in conservation and development in Africa.
• Climate change in terms of its impacts on the natural resources WWF works to conserve, and the people with whom WWF works to improve their livelihoods, and how the two are intrinsically interlinked.
• Climate change vulnerability assessments and adaptation planning.
• Academic, government, and non-governmental organisations active in the climate change fora and debates in Africa.
• Fluent in English, knowledge of French and / or Portuguese ideal.

With its head office based in Nakuru, PDF through partnership with Mercy Corps, an international NGO is currently implementing a local empowerment and peace building program in Nakuru and Molo districts- LEAP II.

The over-arching goal of LEAP II is to strengthen the ability of local, district, and provincial structures to address the root causes of post-election violence and promote sustainable peace and reconciliation.

Project/Field of Activity

The African Union (AU), UNEP and UNECA in cooperation with the African Roundtable on Sustainable Consumption and Production (ARSCP) and African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO) have launched the development of the African Eco-labelling Mechanism (AEM). The German Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Protection and Nuclear Safety (BMU) has provided funding for the initial phase of the institutionalization of the AEM within the framework of the Task Force on Cooperation with Africa founded in the course of the Marrakech Process. The implementing agency for this Project Phase of the Mechanism is GIZ in close cooperation with ARSO. The AEM Secretariat has been set up and is hosted by ARSO. AEM's governance structures comprising of an Executive Board, a Technical Board and Sector Working Groups are being established. One of the main project objectives is to develop an African sustainability standard on which Benchmarking and a certification process with an Eco-label will be based on. Another main task will be to define a viable strategy to ensure long-term financial self-sufficiency of the AEM. The marketing of the eco-label in cooperation with international partners will be another decisive task of the project. Finally, the project aims at developing the capacity of African accreditation and certification bodies and facilitating access of producers to certification.

Responsibilities

You will act as deputy to the Executive Manager and cooperate closely with the other project staff and the officer responsible for the contract and cooperation at GIZ's Kenya office to ensure the project's success and the achievement of the objectives agreed upon with BMU and the AEM Executive Board.

You will support the project's steering and implementation and its coordination with regional and national authorities as well as Sector Working Groups. You will be responsible for the management of project activities as well as the project's monitoring and evaluation. Furthermore, you will cooperate closely with the advisory team from the responsible department at GIZ headquarters, which supports the design of the initiative and in particular the development of the standards and benchmarking system and the design of the marketing strategy.

To ensure the long-term viability of the AEM programme it is highly desirable that you develop a commitment to the AEM beyond the project phase.

Qualifications

You have a Master's degree in agricultural, political, social, economic or environmental sciences and you have already gained at least 5 years of professional experience. You have proven your excellent management skills in international projects and you are a committed team player. You have excellent communication skills, you are accustomed to act in a diplomatic and sensitive manner in a multicultural working environment and you are able to adjust to multiple demands and shifting priorities. Sound knowledge and ideally experience in advising or developing voluntary sustainability standards would be an asset and you should be perfectly acquainted with the diverse cultural backgrounds on the continent. Proficiency in English is required and fluency in French is an asset.
