PR Manager for Africa at Bolt

Bolt is one of the fastest growing startups in the world with over 30M happy customers in 35+ countries, from Europe to Mexico to Africa. We’re building a transport platform to connect millions of riders and drivers around the world to make travel easier, quicker and more reliable.

We are looking for a PR Manager to join the Bolt PR team and help us tell our story across our African markets. 

You will be based in one of our main offices in Nairobi (Kenya) or Johannesburg (South Africa). You’ll report to the Head of Communications and will be part of an international team working in different cities in Europe and Africa, with readiness to travel within your region and to our HQ in Tallinn, Estonia.

What you'll be doing:

  • Make sure that Bolt is known and trusted in all of our target markets in the region to enable us to launch new markets and grow existing ones
  • Develop PR strategies, from corporate to consumer PR, to build awareness of Bolt
  • Plan, deliver and measure results for PR activities in order to ensure consistent positive coverage for the company
  • Develop and run an agency network to help deliver our targets in the region
  • Manage crisis communications 
  • Support employer brand-related activities in your region
  • Work together with marketing and social media teams on integrated campaigns

Requirements:

  • At least 7 years of experience in a PR agency or in-house comms team for a growth company
  • International experience - you’ve run PR campaigns that have included a number of markets, including Kenya, Nigeria or South Africa, and you know how to adapt messages for different audiences
  • Agency experience - you know a great PR agency from a mediocre one
  • A strategic mindset coupled with an eye for detail
  • Outstanding writing skills as well as an understanding of different styles of writing (from press releases to op-eds, from blog posts to spokesperson briefings)
  • Excellent written and spoken English (knowledge of Swahili is a plus)
  • The ability to work closely with different internal teams with confidence

Key Responsibilities:

  • Planning and developing the organizations communication strategies and project campaigns that reach to stakeholders, beneficiaries and the related public.
  • Management of events and other correspondences with the organization

  • Lead in gathering information, write design articles and edit newsletters, reports, journals and other publicity materials;
  • Manage development, production and delivery of promotional campaigns and special publications, including season brochures, flyers, posters, electronic promotions, calendars, and other publicity support materials.
  • Liaising with the media in monitoring and analysis of media coverage for the organization.
  • Work hand in hand with fundraising unit of the organization and all other departments.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Public relations and communications, Journalism a Masters will be an added advantage.
  • Ability to plan, proactively monitor and evaluate meetings, and conferences
  • Team player with ability to deliver, creative, enthusiastic
  • Mature judgment and good media relations
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, editing and writing skills
  • Good knowledge of Web design and maintenance.
  • Membership with a PR body
  • Up-to- date in the field of public relations
  • At least 5 years’ experience in PR with some years in the NGO world.

Public Relations Coordinator

Duties and Responsibilities include:
  • Develop strategic corporate communication plans in collaboration with the Office of the General Secretary and relevant Heads of Divisions and ensure that these are in line with and support the delivery of the organization’s strategic goals and objectives.
  • Devise and implement internal and external communications campaigns on key issues, activities and plans, which include overseeing the development, use and dissemination of corporate communication materials such as the intra/internet, brochures, newsletters etc.
  • Manage effective and efficient documentation of all BSK activities and achievements, ensuring that all relevant highlights are captured and communicated to relevant audiences
  • Participate in the development of a monitoring and evaluation system for measuring the impact of communication activities in the society.

  • Develop an appropriate media strategy for the organization and oversee the management of media relations including acting as the focal point of contact for journalists, press teams etc.

  • Plan, develop and implement PR strategies and take part in updating the overall communication plan as needed.
  • Develop content for the regular update of the web site.
  • Plan and organize all media events, including handling inquiries and relations with the national and international media, e.g. interviews, press releases, press briefings/conferences, provision of documents, pitch stories, site visits, etc.
  • Coordinate the production of annual and other progress reports; preparation of the communication chapter of the semi-annual and annual reports and the monthly updates.
  • Oversee the production of documentaries and other communication materials such as brochures, fliers, catalogues, price lists and profile of the society.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelors degree in Communications or related field
  • Membership to a relevant professional body such as MSK/PRSK
  • Over three (3) years experience gained from a PR agency or a busy PR department
  • Committed Christian in good standing with their Church
Key Skills & Competencies
  • Strong communication, analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Good Public Relations persuasion and negotiation skills in influencing the different publics.
  • Proficiency in Desktop Publishing, Microsoft Office suite, e-mail and Internet.
  • Proficiency in photography, video shooting and editing of functions activities and others of relevance to the BSK publics.
  • Ability to maintain professional integrity in exercising PR and communication duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet in-house and mainstream media editorial deadlines including PR schedules

Reporting to the Senior Manager Public Relations, the job holder will ensure a positive image of Safaricom among the general public by fostering Safaricom’s ability to strategically drive this and respond appropriately to customer needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to all queries in respect of Safaricom from general public, media, special interest groups and other components of the firm’s stakeholder ecosystem. Ensure Safaricom’s leadership in managing issues pertinent to the industry is upheld and maintained.
  • Ensure and maintain absolute confidentiality on information obtained and released, as and when necessary.
  • Ensure that collaterals for Safaricom functions and other forms of communications by the company are prepared and issued in line with brand guidelines and are aligned with overall communications strategy.
  • Maintain and improve Safaricom’s Public Relations strategy and that of its various units and activities, taking into account the internal and external changes in the market. Ensure that these are aligned with online reputation management (ORM) and internal communications strategies.
  • Advise and recommend to Safaricom possible outcomes and response-scenarios based on strategic initiatives made in the year.
  • Act as a credible and trustworthy liaison between Safaricom and the various vendors and partners it deals with in the PR space to ensure cordial relations and value for money in all operations.
  • Collect and communicate information that may give Safaricom strategic advantage.
  • Prepare and submit weekly, monthly, periodic reports within schedule and to standards;
  • Create and administer a proper filing system for the PR section.
Minimum requirements
  • A Degree in Marketing and Communication/Public Relations/ Marketing (specialization in PR is preferred).
  • A post-graduate diploma in Public Relations will be an added advantage.
  • Professional Certifications in Public Relations or Mass Commutation (Diploma/ Higher Diploma).
  • 2-3 years work experience in a large or blue chip company in a PR/Strategic Communications/Media Relations role.
  • The incumbent must be a driven and motivated, can-do, team-player and must be able to demonstrate good written and oral communication skills in both English and Swahili.
  • Excellent speech and general writing and presentation/oratory skills.
  • Ability to travel and work off-site at short notice, and sometimes outside office hours with minimum supervision.

The role: Communications Manager, East Africa

As a member of the Global Communications & Public Affairs team in East Africa, you will work cross-functionally to help communicate with journalists and other thought leaders in East Africa; devise specific communications materials and campaigns based on understanding of journalists' interests; engage in face-to-face meetings with commentators and other opinion formers; develop print and web-based material supporting these campaigns; and counter misinformation that might interfere with our business and ability to serve our users. We're looking for great communicators who can understand complex issues and explain them in person and also via well written, simple blog posts, FAQs, video scripts and more.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist with all communications activities for Google in East Africa (Kenya, Uganda, possibly Tanzania and Rwanda)
  • Represent Google as a company spokesperson for a wide variety of media and blogger inquiries
  • Collaborate with Google engineering, product, sales, and marketing teams to create compelling communications strategies that illustrate the functionality and key benefits of our consumer and advertising products

The role: Outreach Program Manager

As an Outreach Program Manager at Google, you will be responsible for helping the developers, start- ups, and business and IT professionals in the region successfully build applications and grow their businesses using Google's products, developer tools and APIs. This position will benefit from a software engineering background and active participation in all three of the local technical, developer, and business communities. In this role, you will coordinate and execute both online and offline outreach and support programs in the region. Responsibilities:
  • Plan and run regional strategy, community outreach and development, including large-scale public events and grass-roots programs
  • Meet with external tech community including developers, businesses and technical executives to advocate their adoption of our products, explaining business and technical value propositions
  • Own regional blogs and ensure publication of frequent, high-quality content
  • Lead cross-functional project teams and act as the liaison between other global outreach teams and the various product and Engineering groups in Google

Requirements:
  • BA or BS university degree preferred, ideally in Computer Science or Software Engineering
  • Proven experience in a technical role in internet and/or mobile industries strongly preferred

  • Experience as an active participant (ideally as a leader) in technical/developer/business communities
  • Strong project and program management skills as well as excellent communication skills
  • Fluent spoken and written English is a must. Additional French language skills are a significant plus.

Job Purpose:

To increase funding of FAWE from different of sources, provide technical assistance in resource mobilization to National Chapters and build lasting and beneficial partnership for FAWE.
Expected Results to support achievement of results within the 2008-2012 Strategic Plan

Partnerships
  • Existing partnerships strengthened to significantly increase support for FAWE’s activities
  • Scope of existing partnerships expanded into more areas of collaboration
  • Establishment of FAWE in regional African and international bodies such as the AU and the Regional Economic Committees (RECs)
  • New partnerships developed and implemented
  • FAWE’s leadership position in promoting girls’ education in Africa, strengthened through activities with partners
Resource Mobilization
  • Develop relationships with the philanthropist community, foundations, individuals, corporate, bilateral and multilateral donors, and governmental donors as viable revenue pipelines for FAWE
  • Develop and implement new resource mobilization/funding strategy
  • New donors enlisted into Donor’s Consortium and increased donor funding
  • Funding sources diversified to reduce dependency risk
Key Responsibilities

Partnerships
  • Manage a partnership strategy that optimizes relationships with partners that are key to advancing FAWE’s Strategic Plan
  • Develop a strategy and advice the EC and GA on the methodology and benefits of having FAWE representation in regional and international bodies such as CSOs and the RECs
  • Provide technical support to National Chapters to develop country-specific partnership strategies and to expand their capacity to participate effectively in partnerships
  • Responsible for the submission of reports to partners in accordance to the agreed terms between FAWE and the partner
  • Identify, research, build and maintain satisfactory relationships with partners at the regional and international levels
  • Represent FAWE in both external and internal partnership meetings and forums
  • Collaborate with the Communications Unit to develop marketing and communications materials of FAWE to prospective partners
  • Ensure that the engagement of partners maximizes funding and impact potential for FAWE and that FAWE staff follow/implement these partnership strategy
  • Establish and oversee a structure that monitors partnership relationships (e.g. reviews, MOUs, etc)
Resource Mobilization
  • Develop a comprehensive strategy to strengthen and expand donor support into a strong, steady, consistent source of revenue
  • Develop and design a sustainability strategy for FAWE to ensure a profit generating structure
  • Develop a private sector fundraising and partnership plan and be responsible for the overall implementation of this plan
  • Develop and maintain a donor database including contact details, areas of interest/objectives, funding and contractual modalities, and formats
  • Research, approach and negotiate support from new funding partners such as grants, in-kind contributions, event sponsorship, pro bono services etc
  • Maintain and develop relations with existing members of FAWE’s Donors’ Consortium
  • Conduct market research and marketing initiatives to assess priorities and identify new opportunities for resource mobilization
  • Research and analyze donor calls for funding applications and request for expression of interest proposals
  • Identify and justify project possibilities in connection with donor priorities and funding opportunities
  • Develop and establish standards for proposal writing and concept notes to secure resources
  • Develop a capacity building programme to empower National Chapters to enhance resource mobilization and support them to mobilize funds from in-country donors
  • Prospect key markets for potential fundraising targets
  • Ensure timely and high quality grant reporting
Qualifications and experience

Education
  • Masters Degree in Business Communication, Marketing, Public Relations or a related field
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in building partnerships between NGOs, Multilateral and Bilateral and corporate
  • 5 years experience in fundraising from donors, especially private industry
  • Extensive international experience
  • Skilled in identifying strategic opportunities and develop plans to pursue them
  • Have high energy, confident presenter who is able to engage people and get them to commit funding/and or to partnering with FAWE
  • Knowledge and experience of the realities of development issues
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills in English, and good working knowledge of French is desirable
  • Very strong networking skills and excellent interpersonal relationship skills
  • A proven track record of fundraising from major donors, corporate and foundations
  • Good understanding of corporate social responsibility strategies
  • Proven skills in developing and writing successful funding proposals
  • Ability to work with budgets and financial reports
